Greenhope's mission is to empower women involved in substance abuse and the criminal justice system to reclaim their lives, reunite with their families, and rebuild their communities.

Greenhope was established in 1975 in a convent that was transformed into a comprehensive residential treatment program for formerly incarcerated women.

Over the years, it has developed formal relationships with the criminal justice system and has expanded its work to include services for women on parole and those referred by the courts as an alternative to incarceration (ATI).

	Be sure to return to this website in August formore news about the grand opening of Greenhope’s Kandake House, an eight-story "green" alternative to incarceration residence for women and their children, one of the first of its kind in New York State. more > Greenhope is pleased to be a recipient of two, multi-year grants from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. With these awards, we will be able to serve more women in our outpatient substance abuse program and provide clean and safe supportive housing for formerly homeless women with substance abuse or criminal justice histories. The National AIDS Fund recently awarded Greenhope a two-year research grant to determinethe bestinterventions toalleviate the fear and stigma that HIV-positive women face when seeking HIV/AIDS prevention education while they are incarcerated and to determine the support that HIV-positive women need upon reentry to their communities.

Women In Prison In 2001, 161,200 women were incarcerated in U.S. jails and prisons. Since 1990, the annual rate of growth of women inmates is 7.5% which corresponds to a 114% increase to date. 80% of the women committed to NYS prisons were convicted of non-violent drug offenses. In 1982, 67 women were committed to NYS prisons for drug offenses, compared to 1,410 in 2000. 78% of women in prison reported that they have been physically or sexually abused. 76% of women prisoners reported that they are mothers of over 6,000 children.		Success Rates Greenhope maintains a 75% successful completion rate among parolees which is significantly higher than the 25% standard set for the population by the Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services. This year, Greenhope also achieved a 65% job placement rate for its clientele. Because of Greenhope's effectiveness, it was selected by the New York State Division of Parole as the program to receive and rehabilitate all female parolees coming out of prison who were natives of Harlem before their imprisonment through the Harlem Re-entry Court. Greenhope also maintains a recidivism rate of less than 10%.
